How to Cool Down an Over-heated Laptop ?

Have you noticed that your laptop or netbook feel warm ? Is it hot enough that you thought of looking for a way to cool ? Is the screen blank time or have you noticed other odd behavior? We'll talk about remedies in a bit, but first let 's talk about how laptops and netbooks are cooled computers and why they can overheat.

All computers generate heat . The main source of heat in laptops and desktops are the processor and graphics chips . This heat must be dissipated or these devices will live a very short life , ranging from several minutes to several hours.

How do you manage this heat ? A device called a heat sink is attached directly to the chips . A fan inside the case while blowing hot air through the radiator and the outside of the housing . In an office, there is plenty of room for large heatsinks and more fans . In some offices cooled liquid systems are used. Although the space available within a computer is advantageous for the cooling , it is not the case for portable computers. Due to the space , cooling and heat removal is lowered a challenge .

How a laptop is cooled ? To cool the CPU and graphics chips inside a laptop computer , a special heat sink is used . This heater typically uses heatpipe technology to move heat from the device to a heater that has a fan attached to blow air through its fins on the outside. This is where hot air can be felt coming out of your laptop. Yes, a radiator , a well as a car is inside your laptop! If the space between the fins is blocked, the air flow is limited , causing the accumulation of heat on the processor and the graphics chips . This is what happens over time the majority of laptops that overheat. So how can you tell if your laptop is overheating ?

Three warning signs your laptop is overheating.

1) Touch - Feel the bottom of your laptop. If there is an area that is much warmer than the rest , your laptop may be overheating . Put your hand near the vents , there should be a noticeable amount of air flow when the fan is running. You should feel the hot air coming out of the laptop when running under load.

2) Sound - Do you hear the fan rotates at high speed ? If this is the case it happens more now than when it was new? When a laptop is first turned on, it often happens that the fan runs at full speed until the operating system begins loading . After logon the fan should slow down. If the fan speed again shortly after the laptop has been activated, your laptop cooling may be compromised.

3) Performance - Is your laptop slow or even freeze after a short period of use? The processor seems to run about 90 % capacity or more after its been for a while ? Is the screen goes blank shortly after or is their other strange behavior video? If so, the cooling system of your laptop may need special care if the symptom is present with the previous two.

Overheating can damage your laptop? Yes.

If left unattended, your laptop may become permanently damaged requiring replacement of the motherboard to make it work again.

Now, for the prevention and repair.

1) Compressed air - when you got your laptop cooling system functioning free and unlimited . As time passes , however , an accumulation of lint and dust can create problems . Canned air can be used to maintain the cooling system and in most cases to avoid obstruction to accumulate. The compressed air spray in the vent once every two weeks to thirty days will be sufficient. However, once a shoe built within the ventilation chamber , the compressed air will not work. In fact, it can dislodge the plug of lint and block the fan.

2) USB coolers and coolers - If your laptop is overheating a clogged cooling system . Then an external cooler will do little to help . These devices , however, are good for one thing.

3) Keep the vents clear - Use your laptop or laptop so that the inlets and exhaust are not blocked . " Great advice ! " You say, " But if I like to sit on a soft surface , like my couch or my bed? " Well this is where the USB coolers are useful . Their hard surface helps keep the vents open and give a little more air. Also, consider a tour desk for your laptop

What if your laptop is overheating due to a clogged cooling system ?

The best remedy is to have properly maintained by a professional. The laptop must be removed , the radiator removed , cleaned and reassembled. Once this is done , most laptops get a new lease on life.
